French Question Formation
The Three Ways to Ask a Yes/No Question
You can ask the exact same question using these three different methods, which range from casual to formal.
1. Intonation (The Easiest & Most Casual)
This is the simplest way. You simply take a normal statement and raise your voice at the end.
Formula: Statement + ? (with rising intonation)
| Statement | Question | English |
|---|---|---|
| Tu parles français. | Tu parles français ? | You speak French. → You speak French? |
| Il aime le café. | Il aime le café ? | He likes coffee. → He likes coffee? |
| Vous venez demain. | Vous venez demain ? | You are coming tomorrow. → You are coming tomorrow? |
When to use it: Very common in spoken, informal French.
2. Est-ce que (The Versatile & Common Choice)
This is a great, all-purpose question structure. Est-ce que (pronounced "ess-kuh") literally means "is it that..." and it acts as a question marker at the beginning of a sentence.
Formula: Est-ce que + Statement
| Statement | Question | English |
|---|---|---|
| Tu parles français. | Est-ce que tu parles français ? | Do you speak French? |
| Il aime le café. | Est-ce que il aime... → Est-ce qu'il aime le café ? | Does he like coffee? |
| Elles partent. | Est-ce qu'elles partent ? | Are they leaving? |
-
Note: Est-ce que becomes Est-ce qu' before a vowel or silent 'h'.
When to use it: Neutral, works in both spoken and written French. Very safe and common.
3. Inversion (The Most Formal)
This is the most grammatically formal way. You invert the order of the subject pronoun and the verb, connecting them with a hyphen.
Formula: Verb + Hyphen + Subject Pronoun
| Statement | Question | English |
|---|---|---|
| Vous parlez. | Parlez-vous ? | Do you speak? |
| Il comprend. | Comprend-il ? | Does he understand? |
| Elle arrive. | Arrive-t-elle ? | Is she arriving? |
-
The Infamous "-t-": In the 3rd person singular (il/elle/on), if the verb ends in a vowel, you must add a -t- for pronunciation purposes.
-
Parle-t-il ? (Does he speak?)
-
Aime-t-elle ? (Does she like?)
-
When to use it: Formal writing, formal speeches, or very polite conversation. Can sound stiff in everyday chat.
Part 2: Using Question Words (The "Wh-" Questions)
To ask for specific information, you simply add a question word to the beginning of any of the three structures above. Est-ce que is very commonly used with these.
| Question Word | Meaning | Example (using Est-ce que) | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qui | Who | Qui est-ce que tu vois ? | Who do you see? |
| Que / Qu'est-ce que | What | Qu'est-ce que tu fais ? | What are you doing? |
| Où | Where | Où est-ce que vous allez ? | Where are you going? |
| Quand | When | Quand est-ce qu'il part ? | When is he leaving? |
| Pourquoi | Why | Pourquoi est-ce qu'elle pleure ? | Why is she crying? |
| Comment | How | Comment est-ce que tu t'appelles ? | What is your name? (How do you call yourself?) |
| Combien (de) | How much / How many | Combien est-ce que ça coûte ? | How much does it cost? |
| Lequel / Laquelle | Which one | Lequel est-ce que tu préfères ? | Which one do you prefer? |
Part 3: Putting It All Together: A Question in Three Styles
Let's see how to ask the same question using all three methods.
English: Do you understand the lesson?
-
Intonation (Casual):
-
Tu comprends la leçon ?
-
-
Est-ce que (Neutral):
-
Est-ce que tu comprends la leçon ?
-
-
Inversion (Formal):
-
Comprenez-vous la leçon ? (Note: Using "vous" instead of "tu" adds another layer of formality).
-
English: Where is the station?
-
Intonation (Casual, but less common with question words):
-
La gare est où ? (Very colloquial - "The station is where?")
-
-
Est-ce que (Common & Clear):
-
Où est-ce que la gare est ? → Où est-ce qu'est la gare ? (More natural)
-
-
Inversion (Formal/Standard):
-
Où est la gare ? (This is the most standard and common way to ask this specific question).
-
Quick Guide: Which One to Use?
-
Chatting with friends/family: Intonation or Est-ce que.
-
Everyday conversations (shop, cafe): Est-ce que.
-
Writing an email, formal situation: Inversion.
-
With question words: Où est..., Quand part..., etc. (inversion) is very common, as is Où est-ce que....
