Platform Engineering: Make a Simple Path for Developers

A developer wants to create a small service. They spend two days finding a build file, asking for access and learning how to deploy it. Another team repeats the same work. Platform engineering tries to make that common work easier and safer.

A platform is a useful set of shared services and supported ways of working. Its users are developers and the people who run their apps. Start with a real problem, not a long shopping list of tools.

What is an internal developer platform?

It is the set of capabilities a company provides for building, delivering and operating software. It may include service templates, delivery workflows, environments, identity and documentation. A portal is one possible front door. A portal alone is not the whole platform.

A golden path is a recommended way to do a common task. For example: create a Python service from a template, run its tests, build an image and release it with a reviewed workflow. It should explain supported choices and offer a way to ask for help or an exception.

Start with one small service template

Use the shared Lecturre lab as a first template. It already contains an app, tests, a Dockerfile, Kubernetes health checks and a CI check. Add a README that answers these questions:

  • Who owns this service and how do I contact them?
  • How do I start and test it locally?
  • What configuration and secrets does it need?
  • How is a version built and released?
  • Where are its dashboards and runbook?
  • How do I recover from a failed release?

Try the steps with a developer who did not write them. Watch where they get stuck. Improve that step before adding a second template.

Add a simple catalog entry

A service catalog helps people find a service, its owner and its links. Backstage is one open-source option. This descriptor is a small example for its software catalog:

apiVersion: backstage.io/v1alpha1
kind: Component
metadata:
  name: lecturre-demo
description: Local learning service for the DevOps tutorials
  tags:
    - python
    - learning
spec:
  type: service
  lifecycle: experimental
  owner: group:default/learning-team

The owner group must exist in your catalog for its relationship to resolve. Replace learning-team with the right owner in a real project. This file is metadata. It does not create a deployment, give someone cloud access or prove that a service is healthy. You can learn the idea by reviewing the YAML without installing Backstage.

Offer a self-service task with clear boundaries

Choose one task, such as requesting a temporary test environment. Define the input, allowed values, owner, cost limit and expiry. Run checks and require the approvals that fit the risk. Return a useful result: where the environment is, how long it lasts and how to remove it.

Do not let a friendly form become a route to unlimited permissions. The automation behind the form needs a restricted identity. Check the user's permission on the server, not only in the page. Record important changes without recording secret values.

Measure whether the platform helps

Ask how long it takes to make a first safe release, where people wait and how often they need manual help. Check reliability and security too. A faster path that regularly creates broken services is not a good result.

Talk to users who choose another path. They may have a valid need or find the default path confusing. Adoption, task success and useful feedback tell you more than the number of portal pages.

Who owns what?

The platform team owns its shared capability and support promise. Service teams still own their app behaviour, data and user outcomes unless the organisation agrees otherwise. Write down which team handles a failed build, a broken platform component and an application incident.

Plan template updates too. A copied template does not update itself when a base image has a security fix. Use dependency updates, shared components where suitable, release notes and a clear upgrade path.

Practice in one afternoon

  1. Choose the Docker lab as the supported first service.
  2. Write a one-page README with the six questions above.
  3. Add the catalog file with a real practice owner name.
  4. Ask another person to run the tests and explain the release path.
  5. Record their longest wait and fix one cause.

Platform engineering is relevant to teams managing many services, but a small team may need only a good template and documentation. Grow the platform when a repeated problem justifies the work. Continue with secure CI and GitOps to connect the next steps.
